A DIFFERENT DRUMMER

Solo’s: 1 to 5

The following Drum Solo’s numbered ‘one to five’ were captured on video by camera man Erwin Gonnerman during the 2020 ‘Lockdown’ when most of us were at home in isolation for months on end.   We made these video’s at ‘Theatre-on-the-Hill’

I played these short ‘solo’ pieces on my vintage all maple Gretsch drum set {made in USA during the mid-sixties}

You’ll hear the deep tones of the tom-toms and the unique sound of these wonderful drums in a variety of solos which I played without any pre-conceived ideas, so I guess you could say that I ‘improvised in the moment’ whilst attempting to make each solo ‘different’

The cymbals used in solo’s ‘one to five’ are all vintage Avedis Zildjians mostly ‘crash’ and ‘splash’ cymbals ranging in sizes from 12 inch to 20 inch.

I also used a variety of drum sticks, mallets and an unusual pair of ‘Jingle Sticks’ made by ‘Headhunters’ in Canada, comprising a felt ball on the tip of a maple stick onto which a tambourine jingle is attached. {Solo number 5}

All the drum heads are Remo clear pin-stripe Weather Kings with the exception of the snare drum which is fitted with a coated Evans Drumhead.

Silvan Zingg

During 2018 and again in 2019, we invited the eccentric and flamboyant ‘Boogie Woogie’ ambassador from Switzerland, Mr. Silvan Zingg, to join myself and Marc Duby on Double Bass, for a series of concerts in and around Johannesburg and Cape Town.

On the following video which was captured at St. Johns College in Pretoria we play the jazz standard ‘Caravan’ a la Boogie Woogie and when it came to the ‘drum solo’ both Silvan and Marc decided to leave the stage and I continued on my own … for a while … and then in a spontaneous outburst I simply had enough of soloing and ‘gave up’ !!!

Enjoy !

Students and all That Jazz

Every year at our annual ‘Jazz & Blues Weekend’ we create a showcase for a variety of young up-coming music students from various colleges and music schools.

In the following video, recorded at ‘Theatre on the Square’ Sandton in January 2019, you’ll see the talented young jazz student from Tshwane University of Technology, Tshepo Tshabalala, singing Chick Corea’s ‘Spain’ supported by the Roland Moses Trio.

Enjoy !

Daniella Hart

Another young up-coming jazz singer from Pretoria, Daniella Hart, is currently completing her jazz studies at the Texas State University.

Before Daniella departed for the U.S.A we captured her singing ‘I got Rhythm’ in a duo setting with Tony Yoko on drums.

Recorded at ‘Theatre-on-the-Hill’  15th November, 2020
